A feng shui master predicts what this Year of the Dragon will bring for these movers and shakers in the IT industry.
WE HAVE bid farewell to the Rabbit and are ushering in the Dragon; what will the new year have in store for the IT industry?
Feng shui master Kenny Hoo says 2012 is a year with lots of conflict, change and challenge, but there are also lots of opportunities for prosperity.
“The feng shui elements will affect the business performance of company leaders, namely the chief executive officers, and this will reflect on company performances,” he told Bytz.
We furnished Hoo with a handful of companies, the year each of them was founded or incorporated, details of their current leader, as well as key events in the companies’ history.
Here are his predictions for them:
Apple Inc Founded: April 1, 1976 Incorporated: Jan 3, 1977 as Apple Computer CEO: Tim Cook (Born Nov 1, 1960) Business: Consumer hardware, software development, consumer electronics, digital distribution.
There’s no brighter tech star out there now than Apple. In the past five years, it has come out with innovations that have made technology friendly for even the world’s most steadfast luddite.
From the iPod to the iPad 2 and soon the iPad 3, Apple has not failed to impress its fans and gain new ones.
Last year, the company lost its co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, who passed the reins to its former chief operating officer Tim Cook.
Master Hoo says: Apple was incorporated in the year of Dragon in 1976. In my opinion, Apple will face stiffer challenges and competition in this year of the Water Dragon. There will be lots of uncertainties for the company and it may need to change its products and designs, as well as marketing and sales strategies in this, its revival year. Apple will also open a new phase in its line of products this year.
Tim Cook, the new CEO who was born under the sign of the Rat is filled with auspicious qi and positive energies for 2012.
A Lifepath analysis reveals that he will be pressured by internal issues that will initiate revolutionary ideas, sometime between April and September. But these changes will not sit well with some loyal fans of the legendary Jobs in the early stages.
Cook is also expected to enter into a new phase of his Lifepath cycle and the year of the Water Dragon will give him a positive boost that will benefit his career positively.
We therefore expect Cook to achieve his targets despite facing many challenges ahead.
Apple will also have a new brand new image from 2012 onwards and new ranges of products and innovations that will enhance our lifestyles.
Research in Motion Founded: 1984 CEO: Thorsten Heins (born Dec 29, 1957) Business: Telecommunications, mobile device manufacturer The maker of the popular BlackBerry smartphone was named the fastest growing company in 2009 by Fortune magazine. That year, it was able to grow 84% despite a recession. However, the Canadian company has gone through a tough time lately.
Its bid to enter the Tablet market with its Playbook failed miserably last year. It also experienced one of the worst outages when Blackberry users in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa were not able to send and receive BBM and e-mail messages.
Last week, its co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis finally stepped down due to pressure from investors and Thorsten Heins took over as CEO.
Master Hoo says: RIM was founded in the Year of the Rat and both Lazaridis and Balsillie were born in the Year of the Ox.
Lazaridis’ timing was good when he founded RIM in 1984 because that year offered lots of auspicious opportunities and positive energies to people born under Ox sign, which explains RIM’s success.
However, a Lifepath analysis on both Lazaridis and Balsillie revealed that they had conflicts of ideas and disagreements last year, the Year of the Rabbit. This may have been another reason for them stepping down as co-CEOs of the company.
The strong water element this year is unfavourable to both Lazaridis and Balsillie, and things will also be more challenging for RIM now.
The appointment of Heins as CEO will bring a breath of new life into the company. Our analysis shows that he is a kind-hearted person and a meticulous strategist.
But he may not have a strong influence on the company although the Year of the Water Dragon will work to his personal favour. He will face challenges, especially in the coming years.
2012 is the year for RIM to initiate a new company direction and be more innovative in its product strategies. We foresee that the company will spend more on R&D but it shouldn’t expect too much in returns.
Nokia Founded: 1865 Incorporated: 1871 CEO: Stephen Elop (Born Dec 31, 1963) Business: Telecommunications, smartphone software
Nokia started out in the paper manufacturing industry and then became a rubber products manufacturer, before becoming a maker of mobile phones.
It developed the Symbian operating system for its phones and promoted the idea of a phone being not only a communication device but a handheld computer, which eventually led to the smartphone.
However, the smartphone market has since been over taken by other more user-friendly operating systems, such as Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.
CEO Stephen Elop took over the seat in September 2010 and is a former Microsoft employee.
The Finnish company’s latest line of smartphone, the Lumia, will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system and is expected to hit the market next month.
Master Hoo says: 2012 seems to be an excellent business turning point for Nokia’s Stephen Elop who was born in the Year of the Rabbit.
His lucky elements are fire and earth, and from 2011 onwards he will literally be in his own element as he enters the earth and fire cycles in his Lifepath.
Nokia will also be much better off from this year onwards. Its partnership with Microsoft is expected to be fruitful, because Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who was born in the Year of the Monkey, will also be having a smooth career path this year.
Nokia will win back some of its market share in the mobile phone industry and this is a good time for the company to launch innovative products and services.
Samsung Electronics Founded: 1938 Chairman and CEO: Lee Kun-Hee (born January 9, 1942) Business: Consumer electronics, shipbuilding, telecommunications, engineering and construction, financial services, chemicals, retail, heavy industries, entertainment, apparel, and medical services.
Samsung’s name means three stars in Korean and is one of the big names in the electronics industry. Its recent products such as the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note are close competitors to Apple’s iPad and the two companies are battling hard for their Tablet computers to win over the most consumers.
The fight has been intense. Recently, Samsung won a suit brought on by Apple that would have prevented the sale of the Galaxy Tab in Australia. Samsung won the fight just in time to take advantage of the Christmas shopping season.
Samsung continues to roll out new and innovative products.
Master Hoo says: Samsung was founded in the Year of Tiger and in 2010, which was also a Tiger year, it saw some tremendous revolutions in its product lines.
In 2002, which was the Year of the Horse, the company was already known as a producer of world-class products. In this Year of the Dragon, Samsung is expected to face even more challenges from various competitors, especially Apple.
Its CEO is advised to take better care of his health because we foresee the Dragon element will bring some challenges in this area.
The strong water element in 2012 will also be challenging for the company as a whole, and it will need to be toughen up to overcome them.
There will also be a lot of new innovative ideas coming out of Samsung and the company will need to do a lot of planning to produce new products and marketing strategies.
Western Digital Founded: April 23, 1970 President, chief executive officer and director: John F. Coyne (born 1950) Business: Data storage
Western Digital started out making calculator chips before moving on to the hard disk, for which it is more well known. Its storage products like the portable disk drive, and computer hard disks are popular with consumers.
Last year, it was badly affected by the floods in Thailand where its manufacturing plants are located. This disaster affected the supply of its products, creating a shortage.
Master Hoo says: Western Digital was founded in the Year of the Dog. It will continue to face challenges in the Year of Dragon. Moreover, from our analysis, the Thai region, which is occupied by the strong negative No 2 star, is expected to suffer more earth and water related disasters this year.
It is advisable for the company to seek other alternatives for its manufacturing plants.
