THERE are a slew of add-on accessories available for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Tab, like all Honeycomb-based Tablets, supports the USB On-The-Go (OTG) protocol that allows for several USB enhancements that go beyond data syncing and charging. But Samsung hasn’t included a USB port or memory card reader in the Tab in a bid to keep its model thin and lightweight.
However, users can still take advantage of the OTG features by getting the optional USB Connection Kit which comprises a USB adaptor and SD card reader.
The USB adaptor allows users to plug in a keyboard, mouse or thumbdrive to the Tablet and the card reader is for transferring data to and from an SD card directly.
However, peripherals that require a lot of power like a portable hard drive will probably not be able to run off the Tablet’s power. Such devices have to be connected to an auxiliary power source like a powered USB hub.
The Connection Kit retails for RM109.
Or if you are just looking for a physical keyboard, there’s the Keyboard Dock. It not only makes typing easier but keeps the Tablet securely stationed. It also doubles up as a charging dock for the Tab.
The keyboard also features Android hotkeys for launching the Internet browser, e-mail client, music player and more.
It is priced at RM299.
Also available is the Book Cover case to protect the Tab against bumps and scratches. The durable and stylish protective folder features cutouts for the headphone jack, camera and flash.
It can also be used as a stand to hold the Tablet in place, which comes in handy when typing with an external Bluetooth keyboard or even for watching movies.
The flap closes securely thanks to a magnetic clasp but don’t expect it to wake up the Tab from sleep and vice versa. Perhaps, in the next generation. The case costs RM219.
Samsung also has an HDMI adaptor for viewing applications, web browser, presentations, photos or videos on a HDTV.
It retails for RM139.
