KUALA LUMPUR: THE World Cyber Games (WCG) Malaysia 2010 competition kicked off at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre here today with 500 hundred participants expected to compete in the three-day event.
The Malaysian leg of the WCG, which is part of an international event to pick the best gamers in the world, features games such as Warcraft III: Frozen Throne, StarCraft: Brood War, Counter-Strike 1.6, FIFA Soccer 10 and TrackMania.
All the games are played individually with the exception of Counter-Strike, where a team of five battles it out in every game session.
Counter-Strike is also the only game which had preliminary rounds that were held in Johor, Penang and Kuala Lumpur on April 3-18.
According to Pikom (the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia) president Shaifubahrim Saleh, the total prize value for this year’s WCG Malaysia competition is more than RM100,000.
Pikom is the organiser for this year’s WCG Malaysia.
Shaifubahrim said that the winners of Warcraft III and FIFA Soccer 10 will have a chance to represent Malaysia at the world finals in Los Angeles from Sept 30 to Oct 3.
To spice things up at this year’s local final event, there is a mini PC Fair featuring about 90 booths that are focused on the latest games as well as gaming hardware and software.
Additionally, Pikom will be holding a Miss WCG Malaysia 2010 and a cosplay contest.
The event ends this Sunday.
