MP's punch foils snatch thief's getaway

KUALA LUMPUR: Quick thinking by Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun foiled a snatch thief's getaway attempt after his accomplice had been nabbed by members of the public.

Fong, 66, said he was walking to his car after lunch near Shaw Parade, Pudu, when he heard a commotion.

"I turned around and saw several people running after a man.

"As he was running toward me, I threw a punch and hit him on the shoulder," he said.

Fong said the punch slowed the man down enough to allow his pursuers to apprehend him and make a citizen's arrest.

"The man and his accomplice had tried to flee after snatching a woman's mobile phone," he said, adding that the public had made a citizen's arrest of the accomplice earlier.

He also said the woman managed to recover her mobile phone.

"We have to work together to fight crime.

"If I get the chance to help apprehend another criminal, I won't hesitate," he added, lauding the bravery of those who helped apprehend the two criminals.

This is the second case reported in three weeks of members of the public taking action to help take down criminals.

It was reported earlier this month that two snatch thieves, who were in the midst of robbing a woman near Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, were rammed by an alert motorist who witness them in the act.
