Treat for French movie buffs

MOVIE lovers who have an affinity for French films are in for a treat as the French Art and Film Festival 2012 is back for its 11th edition in Penang.

The film festival, which will be held at the Golden Screen Cinemas from June 7 to June 13, features five films that cover genres ranging from comedy and romance to animated feature and drama.

Organised by the Alliance Francaise of Kuala Lumpur, the festival aims to promote the French culture among Malaysians.

Alliance Francaise of Penang president Datuk Renji Sathiah said French films were very well-received in many parts of Europe as well as United States, but not so in Asia.

“Except for the Japanese, Asians have not really warmed up to French films yet,” said Renji.

“French films are quite different from the blockbuster movies from Hollywood but the acting and story-lines are still good,” he said.

Besides the film festival, the Alliance Francaise of Penang will celebrate its 50th Golden Jubilee with a gala dinner at Golden Sands Resort in Penang on June 9.

A harp performance by internationally recognised musician and French singer Cecile Corbel will be featured at the gala dinner.
