KUCHING: Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) ended 2008 on a sweet note by winning one of the nine Aseanta Awards for Excellence 2009.
STB won the Best Asean Marketing and Promotional Campaign category for its Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2008 entry.
Organised by Asean Tourism Association, the award will be presented at the opening ceremony of the Asean Tourism Forum in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Friday.
Delighted with the international recognition, STB chief executive officer Gracie Geikie said the award came at a time when the festival was entering into a new decade.
She disclosed that the award would motivate STB to work harder to ensure that RWMF would continue to be a major tourism attraction for foreigners to come to Sarawak.
Meanwhile, RWMF 2008 organising chairman Benedict Jimbau thanked all those involved directly and indirectly in organising the festival.
His appreciation also went the volunteers who played a big role in the festival.
RWMF is held annually in July at Sarawak Cultural Village in Kuching. The three-day event is staged against the backdrop of the legendary Mount Santubong.
This year’s festival will be held on July 10-12.
Apart from the Best Asean Marketing and Promotional Campaign, the other categories are Best Asean Travel Article, Best Asean Poster, Best Asean Airline Programme, Best Asean Tour Package and Best Asean Tourism Photo.
A non-profitable organisation, Aseanta was formed in 1971 and its members are Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Singapore and Thailand.
The main role of Aseanta is to shape tourism development and policies in the Asean region.
