A 36m Buddha statue for Kelantan

BACHOK: A 36m-tall Standing Buddha is being built at Wat Phithikyan Phutthaktham in Kampung Balai here.

The RM2mil building costs come mostly from public donations, according to head priest Pharphochai Acharn Pho Chai.

Construction began in 2002 and is scheduled to finish in 2009.

Kelantan already has two huge Buddha statues – the 30m-tall Sitting Buddha in Kampung Jubakar and the 10.6m-tall by 40.9m-long Sleeping Buddha in Kampung Jambu.

Both are in Tumpat district.

The Standing Buddha has a lift inside to take visitors to the top of the statue, from where they can have a clear view of the village.

Five workers and an engineer are involved in the construction.

The priest said the statue would attract more tourists to Kelantan as, even now, people from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand were coming to see how the work was being carried out.

With the unique architecture, Kampung Balai would be a major tourist spot, he added.

He said two dragon statues made up the fence of the temple.

The statues, which cost RM150,000 each, were donated by former priest Archan Phrak Ajchan Porchai in 1992. – Bernama
