Good start for Rotary Club Charter Night well attended

THE newly formed Rotary Club of Sungai Petani had a promising start with good support from Rotary Clubs near and far during its Charter Night.

The event drew a good turnout by members of the Rotary Clubs in the northern states. There were others who came from Klang and Gombak.

Sungai Petani Rotary Club was the brainchild of Dr Baskaran Gobala Krishnan.

It was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Butterworth and was officially chartered on June 15, 2010, with 27 charter members.

Charter president Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam was installed by the guest of honour District Governor Leslie Salehuddin before some 240 guests who turned up for the function at the Swiss Inn hotel.

In his maiden speech, Datuk Subramaniam hailed the spirit and dedication of the members.

He expressed confidence that with the combination of the older, experienced members and the younger ones, the Rotary Club of Sungai Petani would go on to achieve great heights.

He thanked the vice-president and chairman of the Charter Night organising committee, Arvind U. Gopi Kumar, for making the event a success.

District Governor Leslie Salehuddin expressed his pride at being able to charter a club during his term as the last club to be chartered in the District was in 2008.

The District Governor ended his speech by handing over the Charter from Rotary International to the Charter president.

The festivities continued with the ex- changing of banners between the Rotary Club of Sungai Petani and the visiting Ro- tary Clubs followed by dinner and fellow- ship.
