Mydin spreads CNY cheer with vibrant lion dances
IN CELEBRATION of the Year of the Snake, Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin) launched its Kongsi Meriah campaign, an initiative designed to honour Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage while fostering unity among its diverse communities.
A highlight of the campaign was a unique contest that gave 28 lucky customers the opportunity to host a vibrant lion dance performance in their own homes.
The lion dance, a cherished tradition during Chinese New Year (CNY), symbolised prosperity and good fortune.
Recognising its cultural significance, Mydin, in collaboration with The Star, organised a contest where customers who spent a minimum of RM118 in a single receipt at any Mydin outlet stood a chance to win a free lion dance performance at their residence.
This initiative not only brought festive cheer directly to customers but also served as a token of appreciation for their unwavering support.
Mydin managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin emphasised the company’s dedication to promoting unity within the nation’s diverse communities.
Reflecting on the success of the previous year’s contest, he shared, “We received very positive and encouraging feedback from this creative competition initiative.
“Therefore, we decided to continue the competition as a way of showing appreciation to our loyal customers while also fostering a spirit of togetherness within Malaysia’s multicultural society.”
Heartwarming customer experiences
The joy of the winners highlighted the impact of the Kongsi Meriah campaign.
Administration executive Yeong Choy Lian, 40, from Batu Caves, shared, “I can’t believe I won this competition. I will give this lion dance performance to my best friend as part of the celebration.”
Lorry driver Goh Eng Guan, 62, from Selayang, said, “I’m so happy to have won this competition just by spending RM200 at Mydin Subang Jaya. This lion dance will be performed for my family in celebration of CNY.”
Senior executive Cheah Kah Wen, 35, from Shah Alam, said, “This year is truly a lucky year for me as I’ve won a lion dance performance. I’m grateful because my family will get to witness the lion dance at our own house this year.”
Similarly, other winners expressed their delight in bringing the festive tradition into their homes, creating memorable experiences for their families and neighbours.
As part of the celebration, the Mydin team also handed over a hamper, a prosperity tray and a box of mandarin oranges to the winners while joining them in the tossing of yee sang.
Adding to the festive cheer, the God of Prosperity also shared lighthearted moments with the families, spreading joy and blessings for the new year.
Additional rewards
Beyond the lion dance performances, the campaign also offered customers the chance to win up to RM8,880 worth of prizes.
In collaboration with The Star, Mydin introduced the ‘Snake Board Game,’ an engaging activity where participants had the opportunity to win a ‘Supermarket Sweep’ and redeem vouchers, coupons and various attractive offers through the MydinRewards app.
This comprehensive approach ensured that every customer had the chance to partake in the festive celebrations and feel appreciated.
Through the Kongsi Meriah campaign, Mydin exemplified its commitment to cultural appreciation and community unity, reinforcing its position as a preferred destination for Malaysians celebrating CNY.
