Trailblaze your legal career

University of Reading Malaysia’s stunning state-of-the-art campus in EduCity, Iskandar Puteri in Johor.

STUDENTS who choose to study law open the door to numerous career opportunities upon graduation.

The most prominent path is a career in the legal profession as an advocate and solicitor.

Advocates and solicitors can specialise in various fields, such as family law, commercial law, criminal law, immigration law, intellectual property law and more, depending on their interests.

In terms of career progression, they can advance to become partners in law firms or pursue the option of establishing their own practice.

Law graduates have diverse career opportunities beyond legal firms. They can enter the private sector as corporate lawyers or legal counsels or take on business advisory and consulting roles, providing legal guidance to clients.

Another interesting line of work includes arbitration and mediation, along with roles in higher education as law academics.

Graduates can also contribute to the public sector by joining the judicial service or the civil service, where they assist in shaping public policies and providing legal advice.

Well-established law degree

University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM), the Malaysian branch campus of the University of Reading UK, is the first and only international branch campus in Malaysia to offer a law degree.

The Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree offered by the University of Reading at both its UK and Malaysia campuses is fully accredited in Malaysia.

Its LL.B course provides students with the initial qualification for entry into the legal profession, being accredited by the Bar Standards Board for the Bar Practice Course, UK (BPC), by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for the Legal Practice Course, UK (LPC) and the Legal Professional Qualifying Board, Malaysia (LPQB) for the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) Examination.

Students have various options to pursue their professional year (the BPC or CLP) either in the UK or Malaysia.

The Reading Law programme emphasises work experience, aiming to develop the students' skills and experience to help them graduate with the best possible prospects.

As such its programme is carefully crafted to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the ever-evolving legal landscape.

Students will have the opportunity to learn from the best and gain valuable mentorship throughout their academic journey.

Study UK option

Students at the Malaysia campus can also take advantage of the flexible options which allows them to spend one or even two years at the campus in Reading UK.

Parents also benefit from the option to decide when they are most comfortable sending their children to the UK.

Furthermore, students can also complete their full degree in Malaysia, which is a more affordable option given that they will pay only 40% of the overall estimated costs compared with studying on the UK campus, considering university fees and living expenses.

The School of Law is situated in the historic Foxhill House on the main campus in Reading UK which is set in 130ha of beautiful parkland and has won the Green Flag award 13 times in a row, making it one of the UK’s top green spaces.

The campus has everything a student could need, including sports facilities, health centre, eateries, a supermarket and on-campus accommodation.

UoRM offers law students some of the best facilities to be found in Malaysia. UoRM’s campus is a spacious, modern facility that houses IT-enabled classrooms, lecture theatre, moot court, legal clinic, Learning Resource Centre and student social areas all conveniently under one roof. Based in EduCity, Asia’s first multi-campus education city, students also enjoy excellent recreational facilities that include an Olympic swimming pool, running track, indoor stadium, fitness centre, music studio and a Student Hub.

Class sizes on the programme are kept low to enable each student to receive personal attention and support for their development.

As well as the highly experienced academic team, students benefit from the wisdom and knowledge of esteemed legal practitioners that are invited as part of the O2O Law Speaker Series.

Students are also encouraged and supported to undertake internships during the Summer breaks to gain work experience.

UoRM benefits from the same advanced digital learning tools and support that is available on the UK campus. This includes access to platforms such as the Blackboard Learning Management System, Blackboard Collaborate and Microsoft Teams.

Students also have round-the-clock access to the university’s digital library which contains thousands of journals and e-books.

Future-proof graduates

Students on the programme receive the perfect balance of academic learning and practical experience.

“The University of Reading is known for producing law graduates who are well-rounded and highly adaptable and therefore able to rise quickly in their chosen legal or business career,” said Reading School of Law head Prof James Devenney.

In a dynamic and constantly changing world, the emphasis is on developing skills that will future-proof graduates.
