Taylor’s College spurs nation-building agenda with quality education for all

Taylor’s College and JPWKL for The Risers ‘Bag to School’ campaign in March to help 1,000 students with their school necessities.

A UNICEF report on ‘Situation Analysis of Adolescents in Malaysia’ showed that more can be done to help provide quality education for all, especially for the disadvantaged groups.

The same report stated that approximately 4.8 million of the entire Malaysian population were adolescents. Out of this total, 2.3 million were those aged between 15 – 18 years old.

Ensuring that this young demographic is well-supported with the right knowledge, tools and experiences will help to create a strong foundation for them to reach their full potential for future success.

Given the statistics, Taylor’s College shared that they would continue to prioritise efforts to impact positive changes in the community through their student engagement arm, The Risers.

The Risers – which includes a mobile app and portal – is a community created by Taylor’s College that seeks to build an environment of conscious thought and action and provide opportunities for students and school leaders to develop leadership skills that can be applied in their professional and personal lives.

Tan said the institution looks forward to engaging with more stakeholders to collaborate on the various community-outreach programmes under The Risers to spur social progress in the nation with the provision of quality education for all.Tan said the institution looks forward to engaging with more stakeholders to collaborate on the various community-outreach programmes under The Risers to spur social progress in the nation with the provision of quality education for all.

“Aligned with the institution’s mission to be the best university for the world, we will continue with our mission to provide support for the nation’s schooling community with the necessities that they need,” said Taylor’s College campus director Josephine Tan.

The Riser’s ‘Engage, Equip and Empower’ movement, which kick-started earlier this year, will continue to be the framework in all its future community outreach endeavours.

“The initiatives under The Risers will focus on building school culture, community and identity by promoting positive values, skills, and knowledge. This strategy is to also support the mission outlined in the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

Tan further hinted that more initiatives would take place at the grassroots level in 2023. Leveraging on its strong relationship with government agencies such as Jabatan Pendidikan Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur (JPWKL), non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and industry partners, the college aims to collaborate with more stakeholders to tackle social issues such as access to quality education and students’ well-being.

“We aim to foster a sense of shared responsibility for student success by involving community members as educational partners. We look forward to fostering many more meaningful collaborations with the new government to ensure the success of these community empowerment initiatives – starting with our “CAREbinet by The Risers” campaign,” she said.

Through “CAREbinet by The Risers”, Taylor’s College along with its partners will fulfil the daily necessities needs such as food, schooling supplies and hygiene products for the B40 school community.

In 2022, more than 10 community-centred initiatives have been implemented throughout the year with the most notable event being the institution’s flagship campaign – RISE Educator Award.

Back in May, Taylor’s College crowned Cikgu Hazeem Azemi as the RISE Educator of the Year winner and awarded RM10,000 to SMK Kuala Krau to help the school build their Studio Multimedia Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi (PPKI) – the first-of-its-kind multimedia studio in public schools in Malaysia catering to special needs and orang asli students in the school.

During the official launch ceremony of SMK Kuala Krau’s Studio Multimedia PPKI, Taylor’s College sponsored 15 tablets and 50 content creator starter kits to help the school furnish their multimedia studio with additional digital tools for their lessons.During the official launch ceremony of SMK Kuala Krau’s Studio Multimedia PPKI, Taylor’s College sponsored 15 tablets and 50 content creator starter kits to help the school furnish their multimedia studio with additional digital tools for their lessons.

In March, Taylor's College together with Jabatan Pendidikan Wilayah Kuala Lumpur (JPWKL) through the 'Bag to School' program helped a total of 1,000 students and families from schools around Kuala Lumpur with necessities to prepare them to go back to school.

Taylor’s College also launched an RM1mil tuition sponsorship programme which benefited over 500 SPM students who received free online tuition for English, Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics and History, together with tuition credit for additional lessons in subjects of their choice, all amounting to RM2,000 per student.

Other engagements include the institutions youth development programmes with long-standing partner, the Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) such as Youth P.A.C.T and the United Asian Debating Championship Malaysia; as well as webinars, talks and workshops on topics such as anti-bullying awareness, mental health and self-care, as well as tips on preparing for major examinations like SPM and IGCSE.
