University’s higher ranking holds greater promise

Taylor’s University looks forward to a promising and impactful year

AS the Year of the Tiger, 2022 offers many positive traits that many can emulate.

In Chinese folklore, the tiger was not originally selected to be in the zodiac, but he showed bravery and skill fending off other animals from attacking humans in their world.

For his good deeds, the Jade Emperor inscribed the Chinese character wang (king) on his forehead and elevated his status.

Similarly, Taylor’s University looks forward to a significant year as it gears its graduates towards prominence to make an impact on its communities.

This year, the QS Asia University Rankings placed it at 53rd in Asia, over 140 spots higher since 2016, making it the top private university in South-East Asia.

“Taylor’s redesigned its curriculum, pedagogy and assessment to create the ‘Taylor’sphere’ ecosystem, in order to prepare students for a post-pandemic world where academic intelligence is not the most important factor for success,” said the university’s deputy vice chancellor and chief academic officer Prof Dr Pradeep Nair.

Taylor’s Prof Dr Pradeep Nair: “The Taylor’sphere environment is supported by resources to help bring solutions to the market.”Taylor’s Prof Dr Pradeep Nair: “The Taylor’sphere environment is supported by resources to help bring solutions to the market.”

“The ecosystem aims to ensure students will not only have the right knowledge and job skills but also essential life skills and social networks to put into practice what they have learnt and find solutions to real-world problems.”

To create a university-wide culture of entrepreneurship and design thinking, all degree programmes have embedded interdisciplinary projects and social innovation modules, requiring students to create solutions to current challenges in society or industries.

Prof Pradeep adds that this Taylor’sphere environment is supported by resources such as the Taylor’s Me.reka Makerspace, open access to physical and virtual laboratories, dedicated life skills and career planning coaches, social innovation mentors, a startup incubator Bizpod and a commercialisation team to help bring solutions to the market.

This is augmented with the introduction of degrees with multiple learning tracks, which include options to spend the final year on an entrepreneurship or work-based learning mode.

Despite pawing into novel methods of pedagogy, the risks are paying off.

Taylor’s University saw 99% of its graduates employed or had gained income within six months, according to survey data by MOHE Tracer Study 2020.

Furthermore, Taylor’s ranking leap in the QS Graduate Employment Rankings 2022 and the QS World University Rankings 2022 meant it has maintained its position as the leading private university in Malaysia and South-East Asia. It is among the top 1.1% of the most influential institutions globally.

Additionally, the university retained the Top 20 world ranking in the Hospitality and Leisure Management subject in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, which makes it the only South-East Asian university to be in the Top 20 ranking.

The same rankings also indicate that Taylor’s Business School is the top private business school in Malaysia.
