AN alarming number of Malaysians are experiencing the effects of poor lifestyle choices.

According to the National Health & Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in Malaysia.

This makes it crucial for us to get a handle on matters of the heart.

World Heart Day is created by the World Heart Federation annually on Sept 29 with the aim to “drive action to educate people by controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.”

In conjunction with World Heart Day this year, beauty and personal care retailer Watsons Malaysia aim to share insights, promote healthy lifestyle and ways to prevent this disease.

Leading up to the annual celebration and to educate the nation on heart health, Watsons together with Star Media Group held a webinar titled Don’t Break Your Heart on Sept 25, 2021.

Thirst for knowledge

In the webinar, participants were able to learn how to take charge by breaking behavioural risk factors that could lead to CVD, like eating healthy, regular exercise and heart-healthy supplements.

They are also able to explore the latest information on heart-related issues including diseases, best practices to maintain a healthy heart and other topical heart issues.

The live webinar featured National Heart Institiute cardiologist and medicine specialist Dr Aslannif Roslan as speaker and Watsons pharmacist Nor Fadhilah Mohammad – who has served in hospitals like Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Columbia Asia Hospital – as moderator.

Having taken care of patients for over a decade, Dr Aslannif counts himself as a passionate doctor with a passion in echocardiography particularly pertaining to valvular heart diseases, thick wall cardiomyopathy and adult congenital heart diseases.

He is also heavily involved in research with four papers as lead author and 10 papers as co-author and considers himself familiar with latest advances in echocardiography such as strain and 3D-imaging – making him the right speaker for the webinar focusing on the heart.

How you can participate

Arming yourself with the right know-how is crucial and could save you and your loved ones from CVD.

The first 300 who registered and attended the webinar stood a chance to get their hands on a packet of organic oat and Watsons discount vouchers.

Available at Watsons is its in-house brand Nutrabliss which carries organic instant oat that is rich in fibre and a great source of beta glucan, raw almonds that are loaded with antioxidants and high in vitamin E, and extra virgin coconut oil which is high in vitamin E and also healthy saturated fat.

Meanwhile, the Watsons omega-3 fish oil is made in Australia and is a great source of Omega-3 marine triglycerides which the brand shares could support both eye and brain health along with maintaining cardiovascular health.

Enjoy great savings up to 30% discount on heart health assortments, FREE blood pressure checks and weight management consultations at any Watsons pharmacy stores
