Celebrating selfless educators

HWUM thanks teachers with gift bags accompanied by silver and blue balloons as its token of appreciation.

AN impetus for digitalisation, the Covid-19 health crisis has signalled a paradigm shift in every part of our daily lives.

Similarly for the education sector in countries across the globe, there has been drastic change in the delivery of both teaching and learning towards partial or even fully digital platforms, as well as the expanded role and responsibilities of educators.

Arguably, this sudden and unprepared transformation has been a unique educational and social experiment for teachers, parents and children alike.

What held true through such turbulent winds of change was the unwavering heart and soul of education: our teachers.

Quick to upskill themselves and adapt to new modes of teaching, teachers tackled the challenges of the new normal head on, in order to keep the wheels of education turning smoothly.

After all, come what may, education – like time – waits for no one.

But make no mistake, the journey has not been an easy one. Undoubtedly, it has brought additional stress to teachers and their families; with most of our educators working day and night to develop online teaching and learning modules to support their students and colleagues.

In gratitude of these selfless contributions and more, on Teachers’ Day, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) is shining a well-deserved spotlight on all local teachers and educators, who inspire hope and ignite imagination in students as they help mould the leaders of tomorrow.

For the university, the fundamental importance of Teachers’ Day on May 16 remains at the forefront of its agenda. And this year, it is all the more meaningful as the special day coincides with HWUM’s bicentennial celebration.

As a private university that has always been passionate about education, HWUM believes that communities flourish when they are inspired, connected and valued.

Therefore, this Teachers’ Day, the university is taking the opportunity to celebrate the nation’s teachers and the education sector. As a token of appreciation, it is paying tribute to 8,000 teachers in Klang Valley by presenting them with gifts for daily use.

HWUM provost and chief executive officer Prof Mushtak Al-Atabi said, “The university hopes through this gesture of goodwill, Malaysians will be reminded of the instrumental role of teachers and educators in moulding future generations with resilience and adaptability.”

Due to the third movement control order, also known as MCO 3.0, the distribution of these special gifts to teachers will continue from June 14 onwards.Due to the third movement control order, also known as MCO 3.0, the distribution of these special gifts to teachers will continue from June 14 onwards.

“In order to practically support the effectiveness, wellbeing and mental health of our teachers and educators, HWUM will also be organising a special online Positive Education conference in July, ” he added.

Through the upcoming digital conference, the university aims to promote the importance of mental health and positive education. This includes empowering teachers to live a happier life and manage stress.

At the same time, the virtual event will also share ways teachers can apply the principles of positive education to cultivate a learning environment that enables them and their students to flourish, in a time when the education landscape is undertaking an extraordinary evolution.
