Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre is now a vaccination centre

The sprawling 150,000 sq ft SPCC vaccination centre allows for some 5,000 people to be vaccinated per day.

IT has been over a year since our lives were uprooted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

And with the daily numbers in four digits, physical distancing and strict standard operating procedures (SOP) have been cemented in our new normal way of life.

However, with the roll-out of vaccinations, a sliver of hope that precious moments we used to share like visiting loved ones during the festive season could be experienced again, once we achieve herd immunity.

While the Government tackles this battle, some private institutions have stepped up and lent their support.

Extending a helping hand, Sunway Group has committed some RM50mil including providing its convention centre rent-free for the next 11 months along with other incentives in support of the Health Ministry to achieve 80% herd immunity.

The group launched the second phase of vaccinations at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre (SPCC) in Selangor and vaccinations will be carried out for the public in SPCC until February 2022, following the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NCIP).

Hashim at the launch of the second phase of vaccinations at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre (SPCC).

At the launch, Selangor health-director Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman said: “The SPCC vaccination centre will allow for some 5,000 people to be vaccinated per day during phase two onwards.

“With a space of 150,000sqft we are able to mobilise our resources in a single location and accelerate vaccinations. This is especially important right now as the threat of the fourth wave is a possibility.”

Meanwhile, Petaling district officer and Petaling disaster management committee director Johary Anuar said that the speed of administering more vaccinations is imminent

“We need more corporations like Sunway Group who quickly summed up the situation and provided the SPCC rent-free to support the Government’s aim to achieve 80% herd immunity.”

SPCC first opened its doors on March 10 and has seen some 9,000 frontline workers vaccinated with a total of some 13,000 doses administered to date.

The first private large-scale vaccination centre in the country, SPCC is expected to oversee vaccinations for some 1.8 million people in the Petaling district, carried out by the Petaling health district office while adhering to strict SOPs.

Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah shared that despite the unprecedented challenges brought by the pandemic, Sunway’s commitment to nation-building and sustainable development remains firm.

“It is my personal belief that no corporation can live apart from the community it serves. As such, we strongly believe in doing well by doing good.

“In line with these values, we have committed more than RM50mil since the lockdown was imposed. You have my pledge that we will continue to help the communities we serve and stand by them in their hour of need, ” he said.

In support of the NCIP, the group was set back by some RM28mil in actual costs including cleaning and sanitisation costs as well as opportunity costs resulting from cancellation of prior bookings and a range of vaccination incentives in support of this national initiative.

The vaccination incentives contributed by various Sunway divisions and retailers include free parking, vouchers and freebies worth some RM20mil for those coming to get vaccinated in the next 10 months.

For the benefit and easy navigation of those who are getting vaccinated, Sunway has set up a one-stop information hub that shares useful tips such as identifying the provided free parking areas, suitable attire to wear and even for those who are wheelchair bound, visit https://www.sunway.city/kualalumpur/lindung-diri lindung-semua/.
