Jawariah still a class above

KUALA LUMPUR : Despite playing tennis on a part-time basis, Jawariah Nordin proved that she’s still the one to beat after winning the fourth leg of the BMW National Circuit.

She defeated Vietnam’s Tran Thi Tam Hao 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the Pudu Tennis Complex on Wednesday. It was her second circuit title this year after claiming her first in April at the same venue.

“I am grateful to have ended this tournament on a high note after not playing for two years. The other national players definitely had the upper hand because they train everyday unlike me,” said Jawariah.

“Since I’ve just started this year, I will play in the national circuits first before pursuing my career further internationally.”

The 24-year-old has been working part-time at the Universiti Malaysia Perlis for the last six months and only resumed active training early this year.

However, there was no double joy for Jawariah as she and her partner, Yuss Yazlin Nabila, lost to Vietnam’s Huynh Khanh-Tran Tam Hoo 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 in the doubles.

In the men’s singles, Mohd Ashaari Zainal saw off Ariez Elyaas Deen Heesham 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to lift the crown while in the men’s doubles, Vietnam’s Pham Huu Vinh-Le Quoc Khanh defeated Syed Agil Naquib-Ashaari 7-5, 7-5 for the title.
