KUALA LUMPUR: It was a fruitful summer break for Choo Lyn Yee as the United States-based student captured her maiden singles title in the third leg of the BMW National Circuit at the Jalan Duta Tennis Complex.
On Wednesday, the 20-year-old Sarawakian, who plays college tennis for East Tennessee State University, dispatched her 18-year-old sister Lyn Yuen 7-5, (5-7) 6-7, 6-4 in the final to pick up the RM1,200 top prize.
“It was a tough and close battle against Lyn Yuen. The match could have gone either way,” said Lyn Yee, who helped Malaysia win the women’s team bronze in 2009 Laos SEA Games.
“I came home for a summer break and decided to play in the tournament for some match practice. It’s really great I was able to win my first title in my first attempt,” she added.
The Choo sisters then teamed up to win the doubles crown by breating Belinda Chai-Nurin Nabilah 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
A new champion was also crowned in the men’s singles when Asian Games-bound Ahmed Deedat Abdul Razak thumped Ariez Elyaas Deen Heesham 7-6 (7-1), 6-0.
“I have been playing in the circuit for several years, but couldn’t get past the quarter-finals and semi-finals for many occasions,” said Ahmed, who took home RM4,000.
“I’m really delighted to have finally nailed my long-awaited title. I came close in April. I made the final for the first time in the second leg in KL, but lost to Syed Agil (Syed Naguib).”
