Welson pips rival to set 200m freestyle record

Wel done: Welson Sim pumping his fist after setting a Games record in the 200m freestyle at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

WELSON Sim swam the race of his life to dethrone defending champion Hoang Quy Phuoc of Vietnam and break the SEA Games record en route to claiming the men’s 200m freestyle gold.

He trailed the Vietnamese from the start but managed to pip Quy Phuoc to the gold at the very end, touching the wall in a new Games record of 1:47.76.
