KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has decided to pull out from the World Junior Squash Championships in the Gold Coast, Australia, scheduled from July 19-29.

Although the meet has not been postponed, Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia director S. Maniam said that pulling out is in the best interests of the players due to Covid-19.

“Although the players have been keeping themselves busy by doing physical exercises at home, it is not enough, ” said Maniam.

“Players need 12 to 16 weeks of training on the courts to prepare themselves well for tournaments.

“With the current situation, we’re not sure when the players will be able to train on the courts.

“The safety of the players is of utmost importance. The Asian Junior Squash Individual Champion-ships (in Quingdao, China, from June 29 to July 3) has been postponed, ” said Maniam.

“And I think the world juniors will also be shelved. And I foresee that there won’t be any competitions until August at the earliest due to the virus.

“I also believe that both the Asian and world juniors will be held late this year either in November or December.”
