PETALING JAYA: High-riding Siow Yee Xian (pic) will be out to give another good account of himself at the national championships which starts on July 16.

At the Nicol David International Squash Centre yesterday, the Melaka lad brushed aside Kuala Lumpur’s Darryl Gan Zi Kang 11-9, 11-3, 11-9 in the Under-19 final to defend his Penang Junior Open title.

Yee Xian is happy to have won it emphatically.

“I had a good game and I got my strategies right. This win augurs well ahead of the nationals,” said the 18-year-old.

“However, like any player, I am aware of my weaknesses.

“There are some parts of my game that needs improvement.

“I need to be more consistent with my game plan and play at a better pace.

“The intensity must be there if I want to become one of the top players in the country.”

Last year, Yee Xian won the title when he beat Pakistan’s Zeeshan Khan 13-11, 11-7, 11-7.

“I feel confident right now. I’ve received a bye at the nationals and hope to get past Muhd Farez Izwan Mohd Mukhtar in the second round.

“It would be great to play against Ng Eain Yow as he’s the highest-ranked Malaysian in the world rankings (38th).”
