Syafiq upstages top seed Aditya in final of home tourney

KUALA LUMPUR: Muhd Syafiq Kamal played one of his best games in squash to upset top seed Aditya Jagtap of India for the men’s singles title in the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) PSA 1 tournament.

The second seed took more than one hour to get the better of his opponent 13-11, 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-4 at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Syafiq pocketed US$992 (RM4,056) while the Indian took home US$627 (RM2,564).

The world No. 95 Syafiq said it felt good to beat Aditya, who is ranked seven rungs above him.

“This win will motivate me to perform even better at the Asian Championships (in Bukit Jalil from May 1-5),” said Syafiq.

Eighth seed Chan Yiwen needed just 23 minutes to beat teammate Ainaa Amani 11-3, 11-7, 11-4 in the women’s final to lift her first PSA title since she turned pro in 2017.

Yiwen took home US$992 (RM4,056) while Ainaa received US$627 (RM2,564).
