PETALING JAYA: Youngster Sanjay Singh Chal lived up to expectations by reaching the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Tour Squash Circuit (SSJM) at the Kangar Squash Complex.
Sanjay, who has never made it to the last eight of a Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour Challenger 10 event, had to dig deep – especially in the third set – to down Elvinn Keo 11-8, 11-7, 20-18 in the seventh leg of the circuit in 38 minutes on Wednesday.
It was a much-needed win for the world No. 156 Sanjay, who could certainly do with a few extra ranking points.
The Sukma (Malaysia Games) gold medallist, however, will find it tougher in the last eight when he takes on third seed Harinderpal Sandhu of India.
World No. 83 Harinder eased past UAE’s Aamir Malik 11-4, 12-10, 11-7 in 25 minutes.
The 20-year-old Sanjay is the only Malaysian left in the fray as three others – Mohd Addeen Idrakie, Valentino Bon Jovi Bong and Ng Eain Yow – crashed out.
