PETALING JAYA: Young rifle shooter Haritz Iklil Hessly Hafiz is beginning to feel right at home with the national shooting team.

Haritz joined the elites in July last year but being a shy person, it took him some time to adjust.

Now, the 20-year-old is loving life with his teammates, whom he proudly calls “family”.

“We have become very close. We help each other and are supportive of one another, ” said Haritz, who is currently training under the quarantine-based approach in Bukit Jalil.

“There’s no difference between newcomers or seniors in our group. You can call us one big happy family.”

In February last year, Haritz was in his element when he upstaged veterans Mohd Ezuan Nasir Khan and Mohd Lutfi Othman to bag the 10m air rifle gold at the Selangor Shooting Championships.

Without any tournaments right now, Haritz and teammates have been taking part in online meets organised by Indonesia and Singapore.

“I was a bag of nerve at first, but after a few outings, I’m more confident competing against the other professional shooters out there, ” he said.

“I’m grateful for the exposure. It gives me the drive to be better.”
