PETALING JAYA: After being away from the range for 39 days, rifleman Mohd Lutfi Othman is dreaming of shooting again – literally.

The 25-year-old said that before sleeping every night, he would imagine himself shooting, and that itself was enough to make him feel like he was back in the sport that he so loves.

But there is a drawback. Lutfi may even be able to dream in colour, but he cannot smell the scene.

“The imagery certainly gives me a sense of the shot, but I cannot smell the bullets, lah, ” joked Lutfi, who is in Seremban with his family.

“I watch lots of my shooting videos to remember the good times that I have had. I am not ashamed to say I have dreamt of winning shooting championships.

“During Ramadhan, I am making sure that I do my physical exercises well. If you get your fitness right, then your mindset will be good.”

Lutfi said he continues to do the physical exercises prepared by his conditioning trainer in the National Sports Council (NSC).

Before the MCO was imposed on March 16, he was imperious in the President Ally T.H. Ong Trophy meet where he won the men’s individual and team rifle 50m three-position at the National Subang Shooting Range.

He was on the brink of winning his third gold in the rifle 50m prone but the tournament was cut short due to Covid-19.

“Honestly, my momentum has been affected, so that is why I am placing lots of importance on fitness and strength during this period. If I do not look after my body, my momentum will not get parah (critical).

“If my body is good, automatically, my mindset will be right, and my confidence will be high.

“Also, the experiences I have had in the past will keep me in good stead.

“Right now, my expectations will have to change based on the competitions that I am taking part in. We will only know once the situation improves.”

Asked if the National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) and NSC had been in touch with him over when training would resume, he said nothing has been announced yet.

“For now, we are just doing our physical training and adhering to the instructions set by the government on the MCO.”
