Looking sharp: National rifle shooter Mohd Ezuan Nasir Khan with the jacket and pants he received from Tanjong Keramat Kota Kinabalu Berhad adviser Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin.

KUALA LUMPUR: Armed with a new attire and a new coach, national rifle shooter Mohd Ezuan Nasir Khan is all fired up to earn an Olympic Games ticket at the Asian Championships in Doha, Qatar, from Nov 3-11.

Ezuan is all pumped up after receiving a new shooting jacket and pants worth RM20,000 from the Tanjong Keramat Kota Kinabalu Berhad Koperasi adviser Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin at a hotel here yesterday.

The Asian Games silver medallist, who has represented Malaysia for the last 12 years, said the new high-tech attire from Germany could not have come at a better time as his old jacket from South Korea, which he had been using since 2017, was torn.

Ezuan welcomed the assistance from the company as he has been cash-strapped since the National Sports Council (NSC) cut down the financial assistance to some of the national athletes this year.

“I must thank the Tanjong Keramat Kota Kinabalu Berhad for sponsoring the jacket. It’s been quite tight for me since the NSC slashed the budget for athletes,” said Ezuan.

“I’m excited to wear the jacket and pants. I hope it will bring me better luck in my pursuit to qualify for my first Olympics.

“I like the new one as it is much more comfortable. I’ll be using it during training. I need two weeks to get used to it, I’ll be ready for the Asian meet.”

Ezuan is also banking on his new coach Zulkifli Mohd to give him the extra edge in Doha.

He will compete in three events – the 10m air rifle individual and mixed team, and the 50m rifle prone but his focus will be on the two Olympic events – 10m air rifle individual and mixed team.

Ezuan will either partner Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi or Shahera Rahim Raja in the 10m air rifle mixed team.

He has done well with both Suryani and Shahera.

He nicked the gold with Suryani at the Tun Hanif Trophy in September and won it with Shahera at the South-East Asia Championships in Jakarta in August.

“I’ve been training under Zulkifli since June and I hope everything will gel nicely for me to qualify for the Olympics,” he said.

“Only the top eight qualifiers to the final will get to compete in the Olympics and I hope to be one of them,” added Ezuan, who will be leaving early to Doha on Oct 27 to train there for one week before the competition begins.

Meanwhile, Yahya is happy to be part of Ezuan’s mission to win honours for the country.

“We are providing the latest technology jacket and pants from Germany to Ezuan because he is one of the top rifle shooters in the country,” said Yahya.

“I hope this is the impetus he needs to qualify for the Olympics,” said Yahya.

“We hope the new attire will bring better luck for Ezuan. We are also hoping that this assistance will inspire him to win a medal at the SEA Games in the Philippines (from Nov 30-Dec 11) too.”
