Rugby team get cracking early to beef up for Birmingham challenge

PETALING JAYA: The national rugby team are getting down to the hard work early to beef up for their challenge at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games starting from July 29-Aug 1.

Coach Mohd Saizul Hafifi Mohd Noor and his charges have left for England on Saturday for their centralised training camp which starts from July 10-23.

They will also play test matches against Worcester and China as part of their preparations.

“We will play in a tournament against Worcester 7s on July 16, and there will be another test match against China on July 20,” said Saizul.

“These matches will help to sharpen our competitive edge as we only got to play two matches against club sides earlier when our preparations for Birmingham started in May.”

The Malaysian team managed to secure their spot at the Games after finishing in the top two among Commonwealth nations at the 2021 Asia Rugby Sevens Series.

Saizul said even though they will be facing some world-class teams in the Commonwealth Games, their goal is to score in every match that they play in.

‘’We’ll be up against world-level teams and it’ll be tough as we’re only Asian level,” he said.

“But we will try to give them a good fight and make sure we score in all the matches.”
