Rugby rookie Nasharuddin playing like a veteran

MOHD Nasharuddin Ismail is only making his debut at the SEA Games but he is already leading the national men’s Rugby 7s team like a seasoned captain.

Yesterday, the 25-year-old led the team to three impressive wins at the at the Parade Grounds in Clarkin their bid to retain the gold medal won in Kuala Lumpur 2017.

The team started their campaign with a 38-0 rout of Indonesia before beating Singapore 26-12 and thrashing Laos 68-0 in the round robin stages.Team manager Dr Ahmad Naim Ismail said debutant Nasharuddin was chosen as the captain for his natural leadership qualities, work ethics, and no nonsense attitude and yesterday, he certainly did his part to inspire the team.

Said Nasharuddin: “It’s an honour to captain the team and to do it in my very first outing at the SEA Games is quite special.

“I’m thankful to my teammates for their effort to get the three wins in convincing fashion.”

“But this is only the start and we still have two more tough matches against Thailand and the Philippines tomorrow (today). We hope to retain our gold medal.”

With three wins from three, Malaysia and the Philippines are at the top of the table. Singapore are in third place with Thailand, Indonesia and Laos lying at the bottom of the pool.

The top two teams will play for the gold medal in the final.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian women’s team had mixed fortune. They defeated Singapore 19-12 and Laos 39-0 but were hammered 5-31 by the Philippines.
