PETALING JAYA: The national lawn bowls team are aiming for a top-three finish at the Lawn Bowls World Cup from Nov 4-8 in Bukit Kiara.

Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz said the national squad should do well when they go up against 12 other nations at the Bukit Kiara National Lawn Bowls Centre.

"Our target is to be on the podium and at least win one gold medal," said Awalan during a press conference yesterday.

"But we are not putting the target on any specific event because that would put pressure on our athletes.

Besides Malaysia, the World Cup will also have Australia, Scotland, England, Canada, Wales, New Zealand, Ireland, the United States, South Africa, India, and Hong Kong.

Awalan added that it was an honour for Malaysia to host the first World Cup after they last hosted the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

"After 27 years, some of the finest talents from around the globe will be coming back to our shores again.

"This is a great opportunity for our players to shine at home," he said.

The national team will be led by former world No. 1 Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple, together with Mohd Soufi Rusli, while Emma Firyana Saroji and Nurul Alyani Jamil will be in the women’s category.

The World Cup will see seven events held across three categories, namely men’s, women’s, and para athletes.

The tournament will also utilise new portable rinks, which are likely to be used at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games next year.

"This is one of the best portable rinks in the world and is recognised by World Bowls.

"We want to ensure our athletes are prepared with the equipment used at international competitions," said Awalan.
