PETALING JAYA: Mohd Hariz Ananda continues to break barriers after becoming one of the first Malaysians to play collegiate ice hockey in the United States.
Former national coach Gary Tan was proud of his homegrown player's achievement.
The 25-year-old Hariz, who studies at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) will compete in the second half of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 1 season.
The UCO Bronchos play in the Western Collegiate Hockey League of the ACHA.
Hariz played in his first game against Colorado State University on Jan 24, but the team lost 1-4.
Gary, who runs the G10 Ice Hockey Academy, said: "I have had the privilege of developing Hariz since he was just 10 years old, and I'm happy to celebrate this milestone with him.
"This is a testament to Hariz’s unwavering dedication, perseverance, and passion for the game. Watching him grow and develop both on and off the ice has been an inspiration.
"From his humble beginnings to paving the way for Malaysian players on this stage, Hariz’s journey is a shining example of the potential in Malaysian ice hockey," said Gary.
Last year, Hariz played his first professional stint overseas with the Melbourne Mustangs in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL).
Gary said it would take Hariz some time to find his footing with the college team as he was joining them towards the end of the season.
"He is helping them out at the tail end of the season. He’s trying to get used to things at the moment.
"It’s a new country, new league, and new level of competition, so it’s not been easy for him as well. But he is doing fine," said Gary.
