Joy for Janardhan as he's now a champ just like dad

Janardhan

KUCHING: Like father like son. Karate exponent Janardhan Thiagu has followed in his father's footsteps to become a winner on the national stage after delivering gold for Federal Territories at IKBN Hall in Miri today (Aug 17).

Janardhan, the eldest son of former SEA Games gold medallist P. Thiagu, won a closely contested boys' kumite below 67kg category against A. Leidaneswaran of Johor on a referee's decision.

The score was 1-1 after normal play and the referee then declared Janardhan as the winner of the final contest based on technical precision.

21-year-old Janardhan is competing in his first Sukma.

It was a day of double joy for Federal Territories as Danesh Asyrraf Mohd Nazri, who is coached by former national exponent Nisha Alagasan, fought his way to gold in the boys' kumite below 55kg category after beating Brunei's Munib Aiman Mohd Hasimudin 7-1.

Hangzhou Asian Games silver medallist Lovelly Anne Robberth did not disappoint for Sabah as she bagged the gold in the girls' kata individual event.
