SEPANG: The success of winning gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games has fired up weightlifter Aniq Kasdan to aim for a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The 20-year-old Segamat-born is optimistic that he will be able to fulfil his dream of performing in his maiden Olympics based on his current form.

“I will focus on doing well in five or six international tournaments to collect qualification points for the Olympics and I am confident that if I can stay focused, I will definitely be able to go there,” he said on arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday.

The bronze medallist at the Hanoi SEA Games last May also announced that the World Championships in Colombia this December will be his first attempt to collect points.

On July 30, Aniq performed admirably to win the nation’s first gold in Birmingham in the 55kg category with a total lift of 249kg (snatch 107kg, clean and jerk 142kg). — Bernama
