Smashing Siti leads lawn bowlers into quarter-finals

THREE straight wins and a spot in the quarter-finals.

Lawn bowler Siti Zalina Ahmad continues to show that she is the real deal in the singles event in the Commonwealth Games.

But to confirm the spot yesterday, she was made to huff and puff by Singapore’s Shermeen Lim in a Group A match at the Victoria Park in Leamington Spa.

In the first seven ends, Shermeen had a 5-4 advantage, but Siti bounced back to lead 10-9 after the next five ends.

But Shermeen didn’t buckle under the pressure as she regained the lead in end 15 to catch up to 12-11. The next seven end saw both of them fighting neck-to-neck but Zalina held on to a slim 18-17 lead after 22 ends.

The Malaysian finally pulled away with three points to wrap-up with 21 points at the final end.

She will face New Zealand’s Katelyn Inch, who also won all three games in the final game yesterday.

Meanwhile, the men’s trio of Mohd Soufi Rosli, Mohd Syamil Syazwan Ramli and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple booked a ticket to the quarter-finals when they finished second in Group D after losing 12-17 to South Africa’s Petrus Breitenbach, Bradley Robinson and Jason Evans.

Soufi, Syamil and Izzat will face Scotland’s Darren Burnett, Ian McLean and Stewart Anderson in the quarter-finals.
