Isaac not eligible for 2024 Olympics

PETALING JAYA: It is too bad that triathlete Isaac Tan Zhen Wei had to give the 2024 Paris Olympics a miss due to his age.

An athlete must accumulate points by competing at world championships for two years to qualify for Olympic Games and the 17-year-old will not be able to make it.

He has to compete in races under Olympic distance (OD) which is twice the distance of sprint distance (SD).

Isaac will only start competing in OD when he is 19 years old which is the same year as the 2024 edition in Paris.

But he won’t be able to qualify for the championship as he has not collected any points yet.

“Most likely he can qualify for the later edition but we need to keep track and monitor his progress yearly,” said coach Albert Tan Yi Wey.

“If he progresses well, maybe he can make it in 2028. He however, has to be focused.

On Friday, competing in the sprint distance which comprises 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, Isaac finished in 34th spot.
