Monsoon finish second in third race of SSL Gold Cup

PETALING JAYA: Olympian Nuraisyah Jamil (pic) lauded her team’s effort despite not getting the best of starts in the Star Sailors League (SSL) Gold Cup Qualifiers in Switzerland.

In Friday’s third of six races, South African’s Ubuntu picked up three points to finish first in 48:16 while Malaysia’s Monsoon bagged two points, 1:27 behind. India came in third, 2:20 behind.

The 26-year-old Nuraisyah rued their failure to get a decent start in the race.

“Although we finished second, we could have fared better if we had a good start.

“The boat speed and such were fine but it was just because the boats were too close together.

“Aside from that, there were no glaring issues to address.

“We know what has transpired and as we move forward, we hope to get a decent stride for the next race. So, I’m hoping Malaysians will wish us luck in our campaign,” she said.

Ubuntu’s second win saw them taking the lead in Group 7 with three races remaining.

Even though Ubuntu and Monsoon both have seven points, the Africans are ahead after picking up two wins and a third place while the Malaysians garnered a win and finished second twice.

Only the top two teams from the eight groups will go through to the Final Series which will take place from Oct 28-Nov 20 in Bahrain.

The 12 teams that have earned their berths are Antigua & Barbuda, Estonia, Ireland, Tahiti, Slovenia, Lithuania, Portugal, Czech Republic, Chile, Peru, Oman and Cuba.
