PETALING JAYA: Malaysia may have found a successor to woman bodybuilder Lilian Tan in Meilaura Dora Jimmy.

Meilaura made the nation proud by winning two gold medals in the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships held at the Hugo Arena in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Tuesday.

The Sabahan came out tops in the women’s 55kg category and also won the overall category.

Meilaura, who is 41, has been involved in the sport for more than a decade and is thrilled to earn her breakthrough result at the world championships.

She is the only Malaysian woman bodybuilder in the team for the world meet.

Lilian blazed a golden trail for Malaysia in women’s bodybuilding by winning the world title four times.

Lilian, who was a competitive swimmer before making the switch, won her last world title in 2018 before retiring the same year.

Meilaura has now stepped up to fill the void after settling for bronze in the 2014 edition.

“I’ve been trying to win the gold each time I compete. My aim was to bring back at least one gold.

“But I won the overall category as well this time. I have to thank the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation, coach Othman Yahya and also the others for helping me prepare for this championship as well as their support,” said Meilaura.

But there was heartbreak for Mohd Syarul Azman Mahen Abdullah who came up short in his bid for a fifth straight world title.

Syarul arrived in Tashkent as the four-time defending champion but had to settle for bronze in the men’s athletic physique up to 167cm this time.

Malaysia also won three silvers in the world meet, which is being run under the bubble concept.

Sarawakian Buda Anchah claimed two silvers in the men’s up to 80kg and 40-49 years categories.

Malvern Abdullah won in the men’s up to 60kg category while Ahmad Faiz Ariffin took fifth place in the men’s athletic physique up to 175cm.
