THE navy is coming to the country’s aid. The Malaysian sailing team and Malaysian Royal Navy will be working together on keelboats at the SEA Games.

The Malaysia Sailing Association (MSA) chief executive officer Mazlan Othman believes the collaboration between the sailors under his association and those from the navy will be essential for the SEA Games.

Even though they only had three weeks to prepare, Mazlan said their training stint at the naval base in Lumut, Perak, last month was fruitful.

“They will be important for us. We trained together for a short time, but these athletes are capable of giving us a medal,” he said.

“The combination of our boys and the navy will be good. The training in Lumut was pretty intensive, and now they will go through the second phase of training in Subic Bay before the Games start.”

The keelboat used for the Games will be the FE 28R version. The two events that will involve keelboat are the match race and fleet race.

The athletes taking part in both competitions are Mohd Masyuri Rahmat, Salleh Ahmad, Ahmad Latif Khan Ali Sabri Khan, Mohd Dhiauddin Rozaini, Naquib Eiman Shahrin and Ariff Abd Razak,

The naval officers in the group are Masyuri, Salleh and Ariff.

As for the conditions in Subic Bay, Mazlan said he was not too worried about it.

However, he did say that food would be a struggle as it is challenging to get halal food in Subic.

“But the officials and athletes can manage the situation. We will deal with it. One thing is for sure, their spirits are high, and that’s what we need to achieve our four gold target.”

Mazlan said they are targeting golds from Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy (Laser standard), Nur Shazrin Mohd Latif (Laser radial), International 420 Men and International 470 men.
