Khairy’s hopes of helming PCM in jeopardy

KUALA LUMPUR: Khairy Jamaluddin’s wish to contest for the Malaysia Paralympic Council (PCM) president’s post has hit a snag.

It is reported that the former Youth and Sports Minister has submitted his nomination on June 15, a day after the closing date, which should rule him out of the contest. An official complaint has been made, questioning Khairy’s nomination validity.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said an investigation would be carried out.

“I’m not sure about the technicalities, but there is an objection. We’ve received the official complaint from PCM and it’ll be investigated,” said Syed Saddiq.

Khairy said it was alright if he is disqualified from the two-way contest with Malaysia Canoe Association president Datuk Seri Megat Shah-riman Zaharudin in the election on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq said they would announce the new Sports Commissioner as the post has been vacant since Datuk Zaiton Othman’s retirement in April. “I’ve signed the appointment letter, it’ll be announced soon.”

Yesterday, Syed Saddiq witnessed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Sports Council (NSC) and three new National Football Development Programme (NFDP) sponsors - Asia Pasifik Sdn Bhd, Kool Sport Ltd and Regent International School in Bukit Jalil.

He said that NFDP would enjoy a sponsorship worth RM2.84mil for the next three to five years.
