PETALING JAYA: Agilan Thani is back with a bang in the ONE FC Welterweight division.

The 23-year-old Malaysian snapped a two-fight losing streak when he defeated legendary Japanese-South Korean Mixed Martial Artist Yoshihiro Akiyama by unanimous decision at the One Championship Legendary Quest in Shanghai, China, Saturday (June 15).

Agilan, who lost his last two bouts against Kiamran Abbasov and Zebaztian Kadestam last year, showed heart and guile against the 43-year-old known as Sexyama.

In the first round, the young Agilan showed great striking skills to silence the veteran, but the match had to be stopped for five minutes when Agilan accidentally kneed Akiyama’s groin.

Second round was all Agilan as he continued to push the former UFC and K1 Ultimate Fighter around the ring but 90 seconds before the end of round two saw Akiyama showing his prowess as a good striker.

Agilan started to slow down and lost his breath in the last seconds of that round.

However, the third round was all Agilan as the youngster showed heart and spirit, throwing numerous punches and attempted several takedowns, in which Akiyama was able to resist.

Judges certainly favoured Agilan thanks to his sheer striking, and the Sentul-born lad will now return to Kuala Lumpur with the winner's medal.

With that win, Agilan now holds a 10-3 win-loss record in Mixed Martial Arts.
