PETALING JAYA: National karate exponent A. Somanroy’s confidence is sky high after a golden outing at the South-East Asian Karate Championship in Bangkok.

The 21-year-old, who was stunned by G. Kathish in the below 84kg at the national championship last month, rose to the occasion when he defeated Indonesia’s Rafi Diaz Nugraha at the Island Hall yesterday.

The Seremban lad said he is now beginning to understand new coach Ali Reza Souleymani’s training system.

“Coach Ali has been with us for the last four months so we are still adapting. I think I’m finally getting it right as the result shows,” said Somanroy.

And this certainly augurs well ahead of the Asian Karate Under-21 Championship in Kota Kinabalu from April 26-28

“The tournament in Bangkok is a warm-up for us before the Asian meet.

“It was a good exposure for me as I managed to execute the coach’s instruction.

“My confidence level is also higher now thanks to this gold medal. Now it’s back to training and I’ll work harder for the Asian meet.”The national contingent consisting of 62 exponents ended their campaign with a creditable third-placed finish.

They took home nine golds, eight silvers and 16 bronze medals.

Vietnam emerged as the overall champions with a 22-20-25 tally, while hosts Thailand were second with 13-8-30.
