WEIGHTLIFTER Mohd Aznil Bidin made it a glorious day for Malaysia by clinching the country’s second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

And he pulled off an unexpected victory in the men’s below 62kg event – eight hours after Mohd Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad delivered the first gold for Malaysia in the men’s below 56kg category in the morning.

It was the first time that Malaysian weightlifters won two gold medals in one day in the Games.

The 24-year-old Aznil from Kedah lifted 126kg in snatch and 162kg in clean and jerk for a total of 288kg at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.

He improved his personal best of 279kg, which he did in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games en route to a fourth placing.

The Podium Programme athlete was happy to overcome the disappointment of finishing empty handed at the KL Games.

Aznil said he was inspired by three key people in his life.

“My coach Wang Zhiquan, team manager Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim and teammate Azroy played a big part in helping me win the gold,” said Aznil.

“I could not have done it without their guidance. Coach Wang has only trained me the last three months but I’ve made tremendous progress.”

“I was in third place after lifting 126kg in the snatch but coach Wang did the right thing by asking me to focus on the clean and jerk.

“I lifted 158kg to move up second, then I lifted 162kg to win,” said Aznil.

“Team manager Amirul always motivates me. And after watching Azroy win gold, I was inspired to do the same.”

“It feels great to win in my first Games against some experienced lifters.

“I’ll train much harder for the Asian Games (in Jakarta, August),” said Aznil, who dedicated his gold to the people of Malaysia and his family in Kedah.

Coach Zhiquan said: “I’ve only trained him for three months. He improved because he is a committed athlete,” said Wang.
