PETALING JAYA: Talented water skier Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah warmed up in style for this week’s Moomba Masters in Melbourne.
The 12-year-old recorded a personal best of 6,610 points to win the Under-17 tricks event at the Moomba LCQ in Mulwala, which is 286km away from Melbourne, on Sunday.
It was a remarkable feat as the double SEA Games gold medallist rewrote her own Asian record of 6,290 points at the Indonesian Open last year.
Australian Briana McGrady finished a distant second with a 3,720 total while compatriot Katy Miller collected 2,710 points to take the bronze.
With the win, Aaliyah is now looking forward to the Moomba Masters, which begins tomorrow on the Yarra River in Melbourne.
She will be competing in the tricks and slalom in the Under-17 category and tricks event in the Open class.
Last year, Aaliyah won a silver in the Under-17 tricks event. She also qualified for the Open final where she competed against some of the world’s best water skiers.“The huge improvement in performance over the weekend has definitely boosted my confidence for the Moomba Masters. I hope to do well again, especially in the Under-17 category,” said Aaliyah, who was the only Malaysian invited for the championships.
