Rayner swaps karate for MMA


PETALING JAYA: Former SEA Games karate gold medallist Rayner Kinsiong has packed up his karategi. Now, he plans to carve out a career in mixed martial arts by competing in the ONE FC. 

The 34-year-old will make his debut at the War of Dragons in Taipei, Taiwan, next month in a lightweight bout against Zhang Zheng-jie of Taiwan.

Rayner, who won the kumite under 75kg gold at the 2001 Kuala Lumpur Games, holds a third Dan black belt in karate. Submission expert Zheng-jie has a 2-0 pro fight record, having secured both wins via kimura lock against Georgios Serganis and a rear naked choke against Shi Zhen Zing. 

Also set to fight in Taiwan is Malaysian bantamweight fighter Muhamad “The Rising” Haidar. He takes on Sung Ming-yen, also of Taiwan.

The main fight card with see Australian Rob “Ruthless” Lisita face Filipino Eric Kelly in a mouth-watering featherweight bout. 

Lisita has a 14-5 record, with his latest win coming from a knockout triumph over Japanese Yusuke Kawanago at the Rise of Heroes in Manila last month.

Kelly has an even better record, amassing 10 victories in 11 fights. Kelly suffered his solitary loss through TKO (eye injury) against compatriot Honorio Banario at the Return of Warriors in February.
