PETALING JAYA: Flyweight Gianni Subba got back to winning ways with a win over Filipino Ruel Catalan at the ONE FC: Era of Champions in Jakarta.
A triangle choke in the second round was enough for the Malaysian to beat Catalan at the Mata Elang International Stadium on Saturday to improve his fight record to 4-1.
Last month, Gianni was forced to surrender his perfect 3-0 record against Eugene Toquero after falling to the Filipino via a unanimous decision at the Rise of Heroes in Manila.
This time, Gianni got in on the act early, wrapping his legs around Catalan to get a triangle choke but ran out of time as the bell sounded at the of the first round.
In the second round, Gianni went on the offensive again, securing double underhooks to take Catalan down only for the latter to land on top. Gianni then secured a triangle choke position for the second time and rained down vicious elbows to force Catalan to tap out.
“That Ruel... he’s a tough kid,” said Gianni after the fight.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Ella Tang lost to Indonesia’s Desi Rahayu in the women’s bantamweight bout.
Ella put up a valiant fight, having endured numerous takedowns and submission attempts by Desi before losing by a unanimous decision in round three.
“I’m sad I didn’t win it for Malaysia, but I’m glad I stuck it out and finished all three rounds. Desi is so strong on the ground and she did try to knock me out but she didn’t make it,” said Ella, who escaped two armbar submissions in round one.
