Venugopal clinches seventh victory in Open 10km category


KUALA LUMPUR: R. Venugopal clinched his seventh victory of the year after coming out tops in the men’s Open 10km category of the Olympic Day Run on Sunday.

The 36-year-old policeman, representing New Balance, clocked 33:08.

R. Thevan of Negri Sembilan was second in 33:17 while Malaysian marathon champion Shaharuddin Hashim finished third with a time of 33:49.

Venugopal received RM500 for his efforts but he was far from pleased with his time.

“I clocked a slow time as I was down with fever last week. I only had four days of training prior to the run,” said Venugopal, who will be competing in the 10km event in the Standard Chartered KL Marathon on Sept 22.

In the women’s Open 10km event, Sheela Samivellu emerged champion for the second straight day with a time of 38.57. On Saturday, the 33-year-old Sheela won the Larian Martabat Anak Bangsa in Putrajaya.

Chua Khit Yeng clocked 46:01 to finish second while Tan Boon Gaik was third in 50:53.

“My mission is to be the country’s top woman road race runner and I believe that I have achieved it,” said Shally, who has now won 15 of the of the 20 races she competed in this year.

The run attracted 15,000 runners this year.
