KUALA LUMPUR: In a career spanning 17 years, it’s hard to believe that bowler Alex Liew has never lifted the national title.

“It’s funny, isn’t it?” he asked with a quizzical look on his face.

“I’ve competed in Open tournaments and won but somehow just never at the national championships ... maybe luck is just not on my side.”

To date, Alex has won seven Open titles – San Marino (2011), Indonesian International (2005, 2006 and 2008), Malaysian International (2006), Selangor International (2005) and Kingdom of Bahrain International (2005) and two masters titles – the Penang Durian (2011) and the Euro-Med International Challenge last year.

However, Alex is hoping that 2013 will paint a different picture as he prepares to go all out for his maiden national championship title at the Inter-state and National Championships, which begin at the Sunway Mega Lanes today.

“It’ll definitely mean a lot to me to be national champion, especially competing against our very best. It’s definitely a title I want to win,” said Alex, who turns 37 on April 22.

“I’m hoping this year will be different and I can finally get my hands on the trophy.”

Alex was the best Malaysian performer at the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Munich, Germany, last month.

The south-paw bowled lines of 216-258-206-248-236-237 for a 1401 total to finish ninth – just four pins shy of England’s Dominic Barrett, who finished eighth (1405) to qualify for Step Three.

“It was definitely disappointing to miss the cut by just four pins but that’s how it is. What matters is how you bounce back,” he said.

The Selangor bowler is also looking to retain the Inter-state all-event title he won last year. Alex bowled 1380, 1276 and 1330 in the singles, doubles and team events for a total score of 3986 to clinch the title ahead of former national ace Aaron Kong of Penang (3940), who finished second, and third placed Kang Bo Long (3924) of Johor.
