Malaysia’s No. 1 shuttler Sonia coming into her own

KUALA LUMPUR: Has Malaysia’s women singles shuttler Sonia Cheah come of age? Almost there, if the 19-year-old’s strong performances in the return leg of the Axiata Cup yesterday at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras is any indication.

Yesterday, the country’s new national No. 1 had held World No. 24 Gu Jun of Singapore by the throat before inexperience saw her losing 19-21, 21-15, 15-21 in a thrilling opener of the tie between hosts Malaysia and their neighbours.
