PETALING JAYA: P. Paramaswaran (pic) credited his putting for enabling him to take a five-stroke lead after the first day of the PGM Satellite Tournament at the Impian Golf and Country Club in Kajang yesterday.
Paramaswaran, the only player to shoot under-par, shot a three-under 69 to lead the PGM Tour qualifying event ahead of two amateurs – Ricky Yeow (74) and Khairul Nizam Rasip (76).
A stroke further back and tied for fourth were Abd Rahman Abdul Hamid and Azharudin Akasah.
Paramaswaran tamed the first nine with a three-under, registering birdies at the fifth, sixth and ninth holes and then carded an even-par on the homeward nine with two another two birdies at the 13th and 14th. He also gave back two strokes at the 10th and 16th holes.
He said that he was just happy to “hold it together” on a course that featured “very good greens”.
“Despite the overnight and early morning rain, the course was in really good condition. With the Impian greens as fast as usual, I’m happy that my putter was hot today,” said Paramaswaran, who is a teaching pro at Bukit Unggul.
He also said that he had only recently returned to competing and hoped that he would be able to keep his form over the three days.
