PETALING JAYA: Shooter Ng Beng Chong seems to get better with age.

The businessman, who will turn 53 on Aug 5, shot a personal best of 137 points to win the men’s individual trap event in the Selangor Shooting Championships at the Subang Range yesterday.

Beng Chong’s previous best was 135 and his score of 116 in the preliminary rounds also surpassed the SEA Games qualifying mark of 112.

Unfortunately for him, there are no shotgun events at the Myanmar SEA Games in December.

Dr Quek Swee Guan, 42, who only took up shooting two years ago, bagged the silver with 129 points while Charles Chen, who holds the national record of 139 points set in Singapore in 2010, only managed 124 to finish third.

Beng Chong admitted that he never expected to shoot a personal best.

“I just did my normal routine and was surprised to score 116 points to finish first among 22 shooters in the qualifying rounds. I did well to score 21 points in the final for a personal best,” said Beng Chong.

“It’s really pleasing to achieve a personal best at my age. I seem to perform better with age. I am physically fit and have good eyesight and will continue competing for as long as I can.

“My goal is to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. To do that, I have to continue improving my personal best.”

Beng Chong made his international debut for Malaysia only six years ago – in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. He also featured in the pre-Olympic meet in Beijing in 2008.

He has won two trap team events in the SEASA championships in Bangkok in 2009 and Selangor last year.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nurrahimin Abdul Halim of Pahang accumulated 1,151 points to equal his own national junior mark, which he set in the boys’ 50m rifle three position event last year.

Negri Sembilan’s Mohd Lufti Othman, who won gold in both the boys’ and men’s 50m rifle prone events on Friday, took silver (1,145 points) while Perak’s Razi Aizat Adzha (1,139) took bronze.
