PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Mohd Syamil Syazwan Ramli and Zuraini Khalid won their playoff matches to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 7th Asia Pacific Merdeka singles championships at the Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium in Pandamaran, Klang, yesterday.
Mohd Syamil defeated compatriot Muhd Azwan Shuhaimi 21-8 while Zuraini beat Hong Kong’s Vivian Yip 21-4.
It will be an all-Malaysian affair between Mohd Syamil-Mohd Hizlee Abdul Rais and Zuraini-Emma Firyana Saroji in the men’s and women’s quarter-finals.
The other men’s quarter-finals pit Malaysia’s Mohd Fairus Abdul Jabal against China’s Terence Lee, Australian Dylan Fisher against New Zealand’s Pat Houlahan and India’s Sunil Bahadur against Filipino Hommer Mercado.
The other women’s quarter-finals will be between Malaysia’s Noorhasani Daud against Filipina Maila Witherigde, Malaysia’s Noor Zafirah Mohd Noor against Australian Claire Duke and Singapore’s Shermeen Lim against Brunei’s D.K. Nurul Babilah.
Malaysia have also confirmed quarter-final berths in the mixed pair events through Fairuz Izwan Abdul Muin-Nabilah Mokhtar and Khairul Anuar Kadir-Azlina Arshad.
The other two Malaysian pairs – Mohd Saufi Rosli-Auni Fathiah Kamis and Ramble Dallan Rice Oxley-Maisarah Aminludin – will be involved in the playoff matches for a place in the quarter-finals.
Malaysia also have three teams through to the quarter-finals in the mixed fours events.
Fifteen countries are competing in three disciplines – singles, mixed pairs and fours.
The other countries are Australia, Brunei, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
