Lawn bowls team on a hot streak in Asia Pacific meet

PETALING JAYA: The bulk of the national lawn bowls players are through to the quarter-finals of the 7th Asia Pacific Merdeka singles championships at the Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium in Panda­ma­­­ran, Klang yesterday.

However, three other Malaysians will know their fate after today’s play-off matches. They are Zuraini Khalid, Mohd Syamil Syazwan Ramil and Muhd Azwan Shuhaimi.

In the women’s singles, Emma Firyana Saroji (Group E), Noorhasani Daud (Group F) and Noor Zafirah Mohd Noor (Group H) topped their respective groups to win automatic berths to the quarter-finals. Singapore’s Shermeen Lim, ranked 12 in the world topped Group G.

In the men’s singles, Mohamad Hizlee Abdul Rais and Mohd Fairus Abdul Jabal finished champions of Group A and B respectively by winning all their four ties to earn a maximum of eight points.

In the mixed-pair events, Malaysia look set to dominate the proceedings after all four pairs won their opening three matches. They are expected to go through to the quarter-finals after today’s final round of matches.

Fifteen countries are competing in three disciplines – singles, mixed pairs and fours. The others are Australia, Brunei, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
